I'm not a fan of flag photos, though, obviously, I do take them from time to time. My grandfather fought in WWI, as did Mr. Bossler, and fortunately, both survived the war. The impolite question is: why? The mantra for all wars involving America is "they died for our freedom." But it's hard to imagine how America would have been less free by avoiding WWI. In fact, it seems very likely that because my grandfather and his fellow Americans fought in WWI, his son, my father, had to fight in WWII. Flags, unfortunately, are all too often part of the symbolism that induces the sacrifice of many people, of all nationalities, to serve the interests of the very few. My heart is with all those who lose loved ones to war and forces beyond our control.

Appropriate photo and thoughts for Memorial Day.

Thank you Evie. After posting this photo I started thinking about the fact that a lot of the people posting and looking at photos on this site are not from the US, and many of them are probably not aware of our Memorial Day holiday or its significance. I probably should have explained the context in which this photo was posted.
