This jetty marks the north side of the entrance to the Brownsville ship channel, built in 1934. The port of Brownsville itself is seventeen miles inland from the South Padre Island jetties. The jetties are about three miles north of the Mexican border. The Gulf intracoastal waterway which begins in Fort Myers, Florida ends just inland from the jetties, at Port Isabel.
