Roundtop Antique Fair: Image 2

I didn't want to lead off with this image because I don't want to suggest that the items pictured are representative of the fair in general. This particular display was actually a relatively small part of what this vendor had to sell, most of which had no racial overtones whatsoever. These items reflect a less than glorious aspect of American history. In the context in which they were displayed, they seemed to be about that history, and not an expression of racist sentiment.

However, there were at least a couple of other vendors selling similar items, and in one case, a vendor selling crude reproductions of old racist posters and magazine covers. In this particular case, these racist reproductions were just about all he was selling, and I did take them to be an expression of racist attitudes.

Racism is still alive and well in the US; and there are still a number of overtly racist communities in the northeastern part of Texas. Some of the people in these communities, even officials, still act as if they were living in about 1926.
