The Armadillo is the Texas State animal, and dead Armadillos tragically litter rural highways throughout the state. This strange looking creature has poor vision and is one of the few animals that can contract leprosy.

Poor creature. They have long expanded beyond Texas, and have followed the interstates east, and as far north I think, as Tennessee. North of that, the roadkill of frequent notice still remains 'possums and skunks.

@Viewfinder: There are a lot of dead skunks around here too, and some possums. One of our dogs tried to get in the house with a possum in his mouth, though in this case, it was just playing possum. I don't know if there are more dead skunks on the road than dillos. I certainly smell more skunk road kill than I see dead dillos, however, the dillo is supposed to respond to cars at night by basically jumping up in front of them, so they may well lead the road kill carnage stats.
