yeah true so sad that ther are some much empty bottles and packets left on top of all the poles that that poor bigger bird had no where to perched on the poles...

@kairospix: I think those bottles and cans were put there intentionally to keep birds off the pilings, or perhaps specifically, pelicans. I'm not sure why it would be preferable to force the pelicans onto the pier. It seems to me it would be better to have birds pooping on the pilings.
