In contrast to the very much alive family of deer in yesterday's photo, this unfortunate creature somehow met his death near the highway and became a feast for vultures. It was up an embankment, pretty far off the road, so it wasn't obviously killed by a car. I only found it because the area was swarming with vultures as I drove past.

Nature and elements in action to recycle its materials for use as soon as possible. Beautiful in its own right

@Amir: Yes, and look at the way the grass has been trampled. I don't know for sure, but I don't think a lot of people were walking around this dead deer, so the grass must have been trampled by all the vultures. It's interesting that birds, big as these vultures are, can wear down grass like this.
Wow. This is such a powerful image and you capture it with compassion.

@Carson: Thank you. I came across another scene like this just this week. It's remarkable how similar the carcasses look. Perhaps due to the way the vultures work.
Gruesome find... were the vultures not dangerous?

@Daroru: To use a human word, vultures are cowards. Of course, this way of looking at them is sort of silly, so perhaps it is better merely to say that vultures are not aggressive. They are in fact, very timid, and the ones feasting on this deer fled when I just stopped my car on the other side of the highway, a good 200' or so away. These birds seem to have a certain place in the natural order that is reflected in their appearance and their behavior.
