New Year's is approaching and the fireworks stands are open for business. I passed some places outside of Austin where there were three or four large fireworks stands all bunched together. Maybe it's just my age but I just don't find fireworks --even the large professional displays-- all that interesting. I do find the nature of this episodic business interesting. For instance, who comes to town twice a year to sell fireworks, living in a trailer right next to their stand (which is there all year round but empty and closed), as these people in the photo do? Do they make a living doing this or are they school teachers making extra money during winter and summer vacations? What this stand represents to me is a whole world of people who don't put in a 40 hour work week or punch a clock --a world that I dream about and long for, but am unwilling to trade the security of my current world to obtain.

They could be modern day gipsies. The blue sky, it looks like it was minutes after sunset.

@JoeB: Perhaps, but I wonder what they do in between July and January.
