I see this all the time while driving, it has become a form of memorial at the accident site.

@JoeB: Happy new year. These memorials are all over the place here as well. Most of them are in places along straight stretches of open road where an accident seems unlikely. I found this one unusual because it was in a place where accidents seem inevitable (bridge supports in the middle of a road) and the damaged guardrail suggests what happened.
Yes, this is a familiar scene... we see it a lot here in South Africa as well. Best wishes for 2008!

These memorials are the saddest places in my opinion

@Amir: There are so many of them, and the ones I see locally make me wonder why I never heard anything about a fatal accident in the area where they are placed. For this one, the nature of the accident seemed not only obvious, but inevitable.
