A frequently tragic sight along rural Texas highways. Cars and highways are hard on native animal populations. I can't drive very far around here without seeing animals of all kinds killed by cars, and often a flock of vultures feasting on their remains. There was a flock of vultures feasting on this deer, but as you'll see in tomorrow's image, this particular deer seems also to have been scavenged by human vultures.

It's pretty gruesome but somehow in B/W and with the clean 'cut' of the deer's torso the shot is removed from reality. It's a very artistic image.

@Daroru: Gruesome it is, and many people will undoubtedly put off by it, but it is an all too common sight around here. I chose B&W to get at least one level of abstraction. Thank you for your comment.
Very painfully to look at, but nonetheless a masterly shot with great detail and sharp contrasts!
BTW: Many thanks for your insightful mail, I'll answer in a few days!

@MadScientist: Thank you. Not sure I'm completely satisfied with my current software for B&W conversions, but Ian Bramham tells me that PSE 5 (I have PSE 4) has some good B&W conversion utilities --and it's cheap-- so I'm going to give it a try.
With its eye open you can't help but feel a sense of guilt since were all part of the technology.

@JoeB: The vultures had actually eaten the eyes when I took this, though that isn't obvious even in the close up of the head posted the following day.
