This was growing out of a deck railing that was trying to return to nature. I don't know what it is --some kind of fungus?

Is it lichen? Some kind of fungus though yeah? Like your turn of phrase - deck railing that was trying to return to nature - great way of seeing this.

@Daroru: Thanks. I have no idea what it is, I very ignorant of plant life. Except for a few of the basics, I have to ask my wife the names of various flowers, plants, and trees.
excellent use of selective focus, the shape of the 'shrooms(?) against the angled lines and curves on the background gives this picture a strong graphic design element.

@Mortola: Thanks. I think this one was all form. There was virtually no color in the original so I thought it would work best in B&W.
