This shot is rather vexing for me because the results are not completely under control. I did not use a starlight filter either on camera or in post-processing. When I took this photo I had just replaced the uncoated UV filter I had been using with a more expensive coated filter, because the uncoated filter was producing spots on my night shots. At this point I don't know whether this effect was produced by refraction from the new filter or it was just a product of the long exposure and somewhat foggy atmosphere. I also have no idea what those blurs of light that appear to be streaking leftward are, in the middle of the image, but I decided to leave them there.
EDIT: As I've been processing other images I'm starting to think the starlight effect is a product of the HDR processing. Note that this effect is not present to the same degree in Tuesday's non-HDR image.

I like the B/W!

@Elisa: Thank you.
i love it. great shot! great composition and detail and light. i'm not sure, but i might've cropped out a bit on the right since that structure moves my eye out of the frame a bit wondering what it is.

@danthro: You're right. The funny thing is, when I was taking this I was thinking to myself how I couldn't get the framing the way I wanted it and might have to crop it later on the computer. Then it just got by me while I was fiddling with the B&W conversion. After reading your comment I took the shot of this I posted at JPG Mag down until I could get around to making the crop.
Wonderful night shot, really beautiful.

cool shot!

@Will: Thank you.
Hi 12-and something! The stars are the effect of the small aperture-opening. f 22. Great shot though!!

@the lightwriter: Doh!! I should have know that. And I didn't need f22 for this shot either --I should have opened it up some.
I was going to commend you on the good use of the filter until I read your comments...still very nicely done!

@Shar: Thanks. I think Lightwriter provided the explanation. Guess I just haven't done that much night work. I didn't experiment with night shots much back in my film days.
However you did it, the effect is quite surreal! I like this very much!

@MadScientist: Thanks. I think Lightwriter is right. I've really only started to experiment with night shots recently and must confess to ignorance about the effect of aperture.
Very outer space like, maybe the lights to the left are UFO's.

@JoeB: I still don't know what caused those lights, but they do indeed look like something on a trajectory of some kind.
