This is the same bird that was in yesterday's image of the two birds on a street lamp. I took this shot before he flew up to the lamp. I've studied several different images and I still don't know what he's eating. Nor do I know what kind of bird this is --my bird knowledge doesn't go much past Cardinals, Mourning Doves, Blue Jays, Sparrows, Humming Birds, Crows, Sea Gulls, and a few others.

It's a starling 12bit, very well caught. Don't know about the snack in its beak.

@Observing: Thanks for the info. I intend to start doing more wildlife shots so I'm going to need to learn more about birds, insects, and animals native to the area.
Super shot! Looks like a blackbird to me.

You need a bird guide of local birds. Usually one can find them in Barnes & Nobles. Unlike common belief, birds (non migratory type) usually are confined within one rather small geographic area. There are often birds with very similar phenotypic (manifested genes in appearance) characteristics, but they belong to different family or at least to different genus.
Awesome shot with a lot of details.

You have a starling there : you might have noticed he walked rather than hopped. But, y'll tell me he flew . . hee hee

@Ronnie 2¢: I didn't see him walk or hop. I spotted him up there over this piece of plywood and slowly moved in. I got as close as I could and then he flew over to the street light.
Nice composition and light. Whatever it is, it looks like it needs lanced. ;)
