@JoeB: I think these are trawl doors used to spread the nets for shrimping. These are small so probably would be used on a small bay shrimp boat, not one that would fish in the Gulf.

@Melissa W.: I went through a phase during my film days when I discovered I could draw and paint. For a long time I didn't take anything much in the way of photos except for family snapshots and did a lot of drawing and painting instead. But while I enjoy drawing very much, I'm too impatient to spend hours or days on a single image (didn't even particularly care for all the time I spent developing film and making prints in the darkroom --without even 1% of the control Photoshop allows). Now, as I try to develop my PP skills I'm finding that working on an image like this is very much like painting, but with a greatly reduced time requirement. This seems to be a very enjoyable combination --the speed of photography and the control and pleasure of painting.
