Seadrift Image 1
Bubba: Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.
Forrest Gump
Shrimp is the fruit and crabs are the vegetables of the sea. This image will inaugurate a series of images taken in and around the area of Seadrift, Texas.

wow . . I like this a lot! The blue and yellow are perfect together and the composition sits real well. I think I smell the salt air off San Antonio Bay!

Nice one, good details and a toxic yellow! When I visited the German coastline ("Ostfriesland") several years ago I noticed that people in the villages who didn't make money with fishing, pitied the fishermen or even regarded them as 'stinking fools'. I found that quite surprising. How's that in your region?

@MadScientist: Shrimping used to be a big industry, especially further south from here. When I was in high school, our neighbors owned a company that built shrimp boats, mostly for the regional market, and sold them as far away as New Zealand. They also owned a bunch of shrimp boats themselves. The boat building business is now shut down --has been for years-- and their boats are all gone. The industry is essentially dead. I can't say I know why, exactly, but I suppose it's a combination of: pollution and environmental destruction, over-fishing, high operational and maintenance costs, regulation, and competition with shrimp farms.
what a capture!! very unique... well done!

The yellow just hits the eyeballs, the crabs can see these a mile away. The wise Bubba and his wisdom of shrimp I guess its a bygone era.

Awesome shot! The contrast of the yellow cages against the basically blue colors in the background is striking!

@Persian King: I took some shots with the D40 and the 18-55mm kit lens too. The difference in perspective made a huge difference in the feel of the shot. I can't say I really cared for any of the wider angle views.
nice colors, lines and framing. don't think i've seen crab traps before

@danthro: That probably means you don't live on the East Coast (or Gulf Coast) or spend much time by the ocean. Being in the Navy, and growing up right on the water, it was hard for me to avoid.
cool composition and color here. i like how the yellows of the traps contrast against the rest of the scene.
