Fire Hydrant by the BayPosted by Twelvebit (Victoria, United States) on 4 June 2008 in Miscellaneous. Seadrift Image 2 A few weeks ago I was looking through a photo book that I got from the library. I don't remember the name of the photographer but he was active in the Ansel Adams days. One of the supposed "avant garde" criticisms of the period went something like: "next, he will be taking photos of fire hydrants." So, we are all meant to understand that photos of fire hydrants are déclassé. Assuming this prejudice persists to this day, by posting this photo, I clearly identify myself as outside the avant garde. I guess I'm such an ornery iconoclastic old cuss that hearing such a critical pronouncement of what fails to be de rigueur would have me taking photos of fire hydrants everywhere. I find a good deal of irony in the pontifications of those who consider themselves to have critical authority, especially when they claim positions as guardians of the experimental; as it seems to me that the act of definition and the determination of what is permissible is inherently bourgeois. I am not suggesting that this image is not also inherently bourgeois. I am merely pointing out that once a style or class or type of imagery is appropriated under the banner of exclusionary dogma, it ceases to be an object of the avant garde and becomes an object of the bourgeoisie. In the end I'm inclined to think that all such terms as "avant garde" and "original" are merely attempts of varying sophistication to justify personal taste as evidence of social and intellectual superiority --which isn't to say that "taste" cannot be developed and educated, or that there is no legitimate claim to higher taste. I seek to present something interesting, or informative, or shocking, or merely pleasing to look at. Though we all, perhaps, aspire to be artists of one kind or another, I am content to be a craftsman. Here, I hope, is an interesting, if not pleasing, image of a fire hydrant, presented for your amusement. I appreciate all comments, critical or complimentary. If you leave a compliment, I thank you in advance; and I will endeavor to reply to all those comments that seem to need a response other than "thank you."
