We Scoop PoopPosted by Twelvebit (Victoria, United States) on 20 July 2008 in Business & Industry. Austin Image 14 This image moves us off 6th Street for a moment. It was taken on Hwy 71 in South Austin. It is one of those images that could be said to lack aesthetic value, but it's a sight I have to share. The side of the truck said: "from $9 per week." I really don't understand who the customers for this service could be, or how there could be enough of them to make a business. It's the only "Dog Duty" vehicle I've ever seen.

Zorilla from H, T & E, United KingdomA friend of mine has started a poop scooping business in the UK. He's based in Southampton and is making a good living from his both his local council and some housing associations. But all of that to one side, what makes this picture for me is it appears that the pooper scooper people are riding gunshot for an armoured truck. Surely that tells us something about what GWB has done for the value of a dollar. 20 Jul 2008 1:14pm @Zorilla: That's the kind of job I wouldn't mind doing myself if I made enough and it allowed me some independence. I would have thought though, that councils and housing associations would have their own maintenance or cleaning staff, and just have them clean up the dog poop. I didn't make that association between the money truck and the pooper scooper, perhaps because whenever I see one of these Garda trucks I'm always wondering why they're named after the Irish National Police. The funny thing is, most Americans have no clue what Monkey Boy has done to the value of a dollar. For instance, they think gasoline costs more because of greedy Arabs and not enough oil drilling in wildlife refuges --and I shit you not. They have no idea that their money is worth less than half as much as it was eight years ago, or that Monkey Boy and his buddies all have large off-shore accounts not denominated in dollars. lisa v from Gawler, AustraliaLots of people can't tolereate picking up their own dogs poop, makes them want to throw up, and lots of people have too many other things to do too so they call the pooper scooper...not a lot of call for this sort of business in australia I should'nt think. 20 Jul 2008 2:16pm @lisa v: I won't interpret that response as something negative about the Land Down Under. Like I said to Zorilla, I was just inclined to think that places where this might be an issue would have their own employees do the clean up. I wouldn't pay someone to clean up my yard --but then, I find my dog's "duty" is biodegradable. étranger from Toronto, CanadaAs per Zorilla, "But all of that to one side, what makes this picture for me is it appears that the pooper scooper people are riding gunshot for an armoured truck. Surely that tells us something about what GWB has done for the value of a dollar." That is my impression also. Except that Greenspan was the wrong man for the job. Nothing wrong with being a disciple of Ayn Rand's objectivist's philosophy; it's a completely different matter when his monetary policy has direct implications for 250 million people who are not raised to understand the consequences of the philosophy of ' live now, pay later'. Paul Volcker had/has the necessary politically incorrect qualifications to do the job. 20 Jul 2008 3:12pm @étranger: I didn't make that association between the money truck and the pooper scooper, perhaps because whenever I see one of these Garda trucks I'm always wondering why they're named after the Irish National Police. I'm not sure it's so much a question of our ruling elites not understanding the consequences of their actions as it is indifference to the consequences --or, in some instances, perhaps even seeking consequences us peons would consider adverse. What I see happening, including in my own industry, is the people on the top milking the herd below them for every drop they can get, and calling it "capitalism." We can argue the merits of capitalism and free markets, but it would have to be a purely theoretical argument, since the words themselves are largely self-serving fictions the ruling class uses to mask the unpalatable reality. étranger from Toronto, CanadaI forgot to add that aesthetics are in sympathy with keeping up with the Joneses. It's intellectually more challenging to taunt the eye of the beholder. 20 Jul 2008 3:29pm Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomThere is an old saying.... ''where theres muck, theres money'' guess it must be true. Good observation. 20 Jul 2008 4:38pm @Observing: Or, perhaps, where there's money, there's muck. MadScientist from Düsseldorf, GermanyHave a look at Aminus3's member Tracey's private blog - she scoops a lot of poop, and makes fine photos too! 20 Jul 2008 10:15pm @MadScientist: Well, I probably shouldn't say this, but I looked at the links, and her bio page, and wow --very attractive woman. The comments on the dog poop incident were amusing, so let me bring the conversation down yet another notch. I was in a pet store a few months a go and went to check out the puppies. I watched, stunned, while one Boston Terrier puppy pooped right into the other puppy's mouth (it was a consensual act, btw). I had a P&S with video capture in my pocket and will always chastise myself for being too stunned to use it. sherri from Little Rock, Arkansas, United StatesIt's the only one I've ever seen too. As far as the business goes, I can see the need for it. People are living in houses with smaller lots than they used to and they still like to have a big dog...or two. There can be a problem on what to do with the waste. When I first saw it I thought it humorous too, but then I thought of when we had both of our German Shepherds...uh-huh:-) 21 Jul 2008 3:09am @sherri: Well, we've got a Great Dane and a German Shepperd. We do have a big yard, but I'm just careful where I walk, and assume their deposits are biodegradable. @danthro: Just think of all the cleanup possibilities for a bullshit scooper business. Just dreaming of course, since that kind of business would never be allowed. Persian King from Tehran, IranI saw their adds the other day in one of our local classified papers, and that is an Idea. Scooping some blue blood's dog poop and make a living, seriously that is what capitalism is all about (Sarcasm) 30 Jul 2008 7:47pm @Persian King: I think you're wrong about that. Perhaps that would fit with the economic theory, but the reality is the Blue Bloods using the political system under the guise of capitalism to loot the middle and lower classes. |
