@MadScientist: I don't know. I don't think I knew most of the other officers enough to truly respect them; and there were a few of them I didn't like, but I was fortunate enough not to be quartered with them. A couple of them I actually lived with by choice when we weren't at sea.

@lisa v: The quarters were small but the sub was big --relatively big anyway.

@Observing: He's actually listening to music and studying piping diagrams, but yes, there could have been a couple of people sleeping at the same time. Some of the enlisted crew actually had to "hotbunk" --share a bunk between two people. One slept while the other was on watch. Watches were stood in three or four "sections." A three section watch meant standing watch in three sections of eight hours --each member of the watch stood eight hours of watch and was off for sixteen hours, during which time, other routine duties had to be performed. We usually had enough qualified officers (not all officers had passed the qualification exams) to stand watch as Officer-of-the-Deck (OOD) in four sections: six hours on, eighteen "off."

@JoeB: No, our mission was to remain undetected, so basically we tried to stay away from all merchant and naval traffic. We were followed out of port by Soviet AGIs --intelligence gathering vessels. A patrol lasted about 90 days.
