Apparently, the Aussies are extremely jealous of the Danish and British Nanny States, and authoritarian regimes like Thailand, so they've decided to go the Brits one better and get themselves an internet blacklist like Thailand and Denmark, and one would suppose, some other freedom loving countries like China and North Korea. Aminus posters in Australia be careful about who you link to after this is in effect: linking to a blacklisted site could cost you $11,000 a day (and of course the blacklist is "secret" so you're not going to know you've been a bad bloke until they tell you to cough up the money).

@MadScientist: I've tried Tor on occasion but it's pretty slow and some things simply don't work. But I suppose that as these inevitable censorship attempts become more prolific it will spur improvement in the methods to bypass them. In some ways I'm surprised the authorities haven't already shut the internet down, and now it is being used so widely by industry a complete shutdown probably isn't going to be possible.

@Julian Kilsby: More telling than 1984, I think, is his essay on the corruption of language and meaning --Politics and the English Language. I think the debasement of language is what has paved the way for everything else.

A German maintainer of a TOR server (actually it was a TOR router) already experienced a house search last year. The police couldn't find anything criminal, but the maintainer decided to discontinue his service. You even don't have to tighten the law, just provide a threat scenario and you're done.

@MadScientist: Maybe this was just to eliminate the competition for pay proxies? And/or, maybe I'm just cynical and paranoid, but I suspect some of the pay proxies are honey pot operations.
